Coronavirus Covid-19 second wave in India: The Covid-19 situation in India has turned grim with the country’s daily count crossing the 1-lakh mark for the first time since the pandemic struck the nation last year. Daily Covid-19 cases in India increased fivefold to over 100,000 from 20,000 in just two weeks.

Maharashtra, the worst-hit state, alone accounted for more than half of India’s total cases (daily). The state even imposed night curfew yesterday and announced weekend lockdowns to break the chain. States like Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, etc have announced several restrictions, including night curfews and restrictions on the movement of people, in order to limit the spread of the second wave of Coronavirus infection.

According to sources, the Delhi government is also considering a proposal to impose night curfew after the recent surge in coronavirus infections. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove the age limit for Covid-19 vaccination in order to expedite the inoculation drive in the country, to cover more people. Some health experts have also demanded the removal of the age criteria for taking Covid jabs.

Amid the sudden spike in Covid-19 cases, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan is scheduled to meet today his counterparts from 11 states which are witnessing a sharp spike in Coronavirus infections, to take stock of the situation. The meeting will also set the agenda for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Thursday meeting with state chief ministers and UTs administrators to discuss ways to contain the Covid-19 spike.

With the addition of5,287 new cases of coronavirus, the infection count in Thane district of Maharashtra has reached 3,44,030, an official said on Tuesday. These new cases were reported on Monday, he said. The virus also claimed the lives of 20 more people, pushing the death toll in the district to 6,581, he said. The COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane is 1.91 per cent, he said. So far, 2,95,701 patients have recuperated from the infection in the district, which reflects a recovery rate of 85.95 per cent. There are 41,748 active COVID-19 cases in Thane at present, the official said. (PTI)

World Bank President David Malpass has said that with the Serum Institute, India is blessed to have a major manufacturer of global vaccines and he is encouraged by the country’s ramping up of its domestic vaccination programme. Malpass made the comments on Monday during a media roundtable ahead of the spring meeting of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. “I’ve had substantial contact with the Serum Institute. India is blessed with having a major manufacturer of global vaccines in India,” he said. Responding to a question, Malpass said that he has encouraged more transparency in terms of what the national requirements are for local production, and that extends to countries around the world. “It hasn’t been clear, whether in the United States or in Europe, or in South Africa, or in India, what the requirements are of their local production to meet local demands. I’ve been encouraged by India’s ramping up of its domestic vaccination programme, and we’re working with them on that. This is a high priority for the world,” Malpass said. (PTI)

Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Tuesday said the possibility of imposing certain restrictions in the state to curb the rising COVID-19 cases would be discussed with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. On Monday, Sawant said there was no immediate plan to impose a lockdown or curfew in Goa, but his government was monitoring the COVID-19 situation in the state and neighbouring Maharashtra and Karnataka. Rane chaired a meeting of health officials on Monday to review the COVID-19 situation in the coastal state and later met the chief minister. (PTI)

A proposal to impose night curfew in the national capital is being considered by the Delhi government in view of rising coronavirus cases, official sources said on Monday. “A proposal for imposing night curfew is under consideration.
